Fertilizers are natural or synthetic materials added to the soil, plants or part of the plant which improves the growth, fertilization and yielding of the plants, this is achieved by either the fertilizers providing nutrients or enhancing effectiveness of the soil to aerate or increase its water retention.
Maximum production of yield is achieved through supplying enough nutrients in the soil, improving aeration in the soil and water retention and is aeration can be done by adjustment of soil composition.
There are different types of fertilizers with different functions when applied; fertilizers provide various proportions in the soil like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium nutrients,nitrogen gives the leaf growth; phosphorus helps in fruit, flower and root development while potassium gives strong growth, enables water movement and promotes flowering.
Application of fertilizers is essential to all plants but differs due to some actors, they include the type of plants and soil too, Some plants like legumes do not need nitrogenous fertilizers as they can naturally fix their own from the atmosphere.
For higher yielding and productions, aeration of the soil and application of fertilizers should be the first priority as they increase plants and root growth; supply of oxygen to the roots and removal of carbon dioxide is very essential for healthy plant growth. Because of inadequate oxygen supply in the soils, plants may retard or completely die when carbon dioxide accumulates fully.
Fertilizers improve microorganism population activity in the soil as they require oxygen for survival in the soil and the deficiency of oxygen in the soils slows down the rate of these microbial activity leading to either drying up of crops.
Poor aeration in the soil may lead to formation of toxic materials in the soil, this results to development of injurious substances such as ferrous oxide or carbon dioxide as these gases no way to get out; this might lead to abrupt dying of plant or affecting flowering of the crops.
Fertilizers assist to increase yields and promote healthy growth of plants; plants which have been well cultivated and given the correct type of fertilizers end up giving higher yields. In fact some nutrients like phosphorus in fertilizers aids in the faster formation of seeds and root development.
Survival of plants in cases of adequate rains to produce better yields can be increased by use of fertilizers containing potassium; these nutrients increase the ability of plants to hold water in between them by strengthening of stalks and straws.
Fertility of soils is determined by how the soil is aerated and how much fertilizer is in that soil. Fertilizer’s function is to improve fertility and texture and fertilizers like manure serves the best soil enhancer eradicating soil problems.
Application of fertilizers and manures in the farm puts its aerated and fertile for a long period of time such that one needs not to put it in the next farming season even after cultivation.
